SEDES-SS-FBFE-201708-2_2

The SEDES IJL "Fish biology and functional ecology” Summer School sought to support students, young and confirmed researchers by strengthening their methodological skills in fish biology and functional ecology when studying coastal environments and more precisely the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam. The Summer School consisted of a 4 days’ program combining theoretical and empirical fieldwork on different fields of research on fish (e-DNA, taxonomy based on morpho-anatomy and DNA barcoding, life history traits and functional ecology). The main goal was to provide to participants an overview of various approaches and methods relevant to study the diversity, biology and ecology of fishes and to highlight some of the key methodological challenges that arise in coastal research. The different themes were presented by a consortium of international experts (Chinese, French, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese) with varied teaching and learning formats.

Introduction

The SEDES International Joint Laboratory, launched in June 2016, aims to investigate how the key socio-ecological services provided by delta’s coastal waters can be sustained, restored and/or valorized in different political and environmental contexts, and under the pressure of global changes. SEDES, grounded in a North-South multidisciplinary scientific partnership, links socio-cultural, environmental and biological sciences in the complex socio-environments given by the deltas. The final goal is to propose methodologies to study services from delta coastal waters using interdisciplinary approaches.

The SEDES IJL "Fish biology and functional ecology” Summer School sought to support students, and young and confirmed researchers by strengthening their methodological skills in fish biology and functional ecology when studying coastal environments and more precisely the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam. The summer school took place during 4 days at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (VNUHCM).

21 students attended the SEDES Summer School.
