Project Description

Tropical marine costal habitats are hotspots of diversity and productivity which play an essential role in the functioning of littoral zones providing multiple services. These ecosystems are amongst the most threatened by global changes and human activities. To limit the biodiversity loss, marine protected areas (MPA) had spread over but their design is rarely based on strict scientific considerations. In this context, the MPA’s relevance for these habitats and their biodiversity is largely based on adult fish communities. Early stage distributions in coastal zones condition the adult population dynamics and necessitate more investigations. The project aims at investigating the spatial and temporal distribution of larvae and juveniles in a mosaic of marine habitats in the Con Dao archipelago, the oldest MPA in Vietnam. Studied habitats will include mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs, which harbour nurseries of many marine fishes. The project studies the diversity using DNA barcoding and life history traits using sclerochronology. Four main questions will be addressed: Are fish larval or juvenile assemblages and abundances different between close habitats during settlement? Is there a habitat shift during the ontogenetic development? What is the time of settlement for species and does it depend on habitat? Are growth rates different among juveniles of species encountered in different habitats? Besides ecological knowledge, the answers could be used for MPA management.
