About ASI 2017

The annual meeting of the Asian Society of Ichthyologists (ASI 2017) was held in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam on 22-24 August 2017 by the University of Science – VNUHCM.

ASI – The Asian Society of Ichthyologists was established in 2014 to promote the knowledge on economic uses and conservation of fishes, and to disseminate scientific and technical information about fishes between fish scientists from Asian countries. After 3 annual meetings with great success (2014 Penang-Malaysia, 2015 Guilin-China, 2016 Taipei-Taiwan), ichthyologists from Asia and Pacific countries joined ASI and set up many collaborations.

On 22-24 August 2017, the Annual meeting of the Asian Society of Ichthyologists 2017 was held at Ho Chi Minh city, organized by Assoc. Prof. Hoang Duc Huy of the University of Science and the ASI board.

On 22 August 2017, the Opening Ceremony was honored to welcome Mr. Bui Quy Long (CEO & Director of Centre Center for Vietnam Science and Technology Internationalization Promotion – VISTIP, Ministry of Science and Technology), Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Van Hieu (Head of Office of International Relationship and Project Management, US-VNUHCM), Dr. Nguyen Tri Nhan (Dean of Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, US-VNUHCM), and researchers from related fisheries’ institutes.

The ASI 2017 symposium took place at the Hotel Equatorial (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City).

During the conference, ichthyologists took opportunities to meet and exchange on their researches, and established new collaborations in order to conduct researches in different thematic fields such as ecology, taxonomy, evolution, population biology, to fisheries, conservation, management, and ecosystem services.

During the last day (24/08/2017), participants joined fieldtrips in Binh Dien fish market and Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve to have different views of the fish diversity and aquatic ecosystems in Southern Viet Nam.
